The Eye of the Tiger

I’m in a bit of a creative funk. I’m just not feeling particularly motivated to create lately. I go through these phases every now and again, and I know that it’ll pass eventually, but in the interim it’s kind of annoying. One thing that I think might help is setting myself a goal to work on so I don’t feel quite so adrift and aimless. I thought about filling a page in my sketchbook every day. I could fill it with whatever felt right – doodles, writing, a collage of magazine clippings. This isn’t a terrible idea, but it feels a little too unfocused and easy to weasel my way out of. Wait wait WAIT….Weasel?? Now I’m on to something!

So for the month of June, I think I’m going to draw an animal every day. I love to draw animals. My plan is to create an animal a day from a reference photo. I’ve been wanting to get better at drawing from reference anyway, and it just so happens that I have a stack of gorgeous full color animal books that I can use. I might just sketch in pencil, I may paint, I may do something completely outside the box, but It’ll be an animal and it’ll be made using a reference photo.

I’m excited! I hope this will help me to break out of my rut and give me something to work on every day. To stay accountable, I’ll post the images to Twitter, and also to my Facebook page. The links for both are below so you can follow along.

Here’s a red panda that I drew from a reference photo exactly 3 years ago today! What a coincidence!

Inky Animals & Awesomeness

Inktober does have a list of prompts, but I decided to go it alone and just draw whatever I felt like drawing. That has turned out to be mostly animals so far! Here are my next 3. Mostly drawn with my Lamy Joy fountain pen and Noodler’s Heart of Darkness black ink. I added a bit of colored pencil as well. I hope you like them!

Inktober 2016

I’m participating in Inktober this year! It’s a challenge to create an ink drawing every day during the month of October. I probably won’t post the drawings here every day, but I’ll update once a week or so. Here’s my first, a bunny I drew with my Lamy Joy and Noodler’s Heart of Darkness ink. Cheers!

Bear Ears and Beers

I’m taking an art class to learn how to write and draw comics. The first assignment was to draw a 2 page autobiographical comic. TWO. PAGES. That seems like so much. I looked through some of the other students early submissions and they were REALLY great. I’ve been so stressed out and nervous about this and I wasn’t sure what to do or what to write about and I don’t know how to draw comics and I’m not a good enough artist and what am I doing in this class in the first place and WHEEEEW. So much inner critic monkey on my back. I finally shoved a banana in his pie hole to shut him up and got to work. This is not the greatest comic in history, but I’m very proud of it. I thought it was going to take forever, but once I had my ideas together and actually got to work on it, it flowed. I definitely need some work to get my narrative to be more compelling and cohesive, and I need to practice using space more effectively, but overall, I’m happy with how this turned out. I hope you like it, too. You can click each page to see the larger version.

The Getaway

Fall was short, as usual around these parts, and we’ve quietly nestled ourselves into winter. I’m in full footie pajama & fires in the fireplace mode. Behold my color fire!!

Color Fire

It’s been a while since I posted anything, so here’s just a random catch up of what’s been happening, and some recent artwork. I’ve gotten into oil pastels lately, and it’s been fun to play around with them. They’re such an interesting medium – they require practice but once you figure them out they just blend together so beautifully. I really enjoy putting down layers of color and watching them melt into one another. Plus oil pastels produce a texture like nothing else.

I don’t think it’s a secret that I have a love affair with watercolors. I’m drawn (see what I did there?? HAHAHAH) to all types of water soluble media, but watercolors are the ultimate for me. I’ve been using the same palette for a few years now. It’s a really cheap kid’s palette and it has a plastic lid that was broken in several places and repaired with duct tape. Some of the tiny paint pans were falling out and my favorite colors were nearly all used up. I decided it was time to get a decent quality palette. I bought a palette about 2 years ago from Sakura – the field sketch box. It was about $25 and I was pretty disappointed. I actually preferred my kid’s palette because the Sakura paints dried to a very chalky finish, and I didn’t like it at all. This time I chose the Daler Rowney Aquafine Watercolor Palette. It was about the same price as the Sakura – $25. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this palette! First off, it’s small and portable with a metal case – so no more duct tape repairs! These colors are just so beautiful and vibrant, and they dry to an almost glossy finish compared to the bone dry Sakura paints. Here’s a quick little sketch I did when I was trying this new palette out.

I recently stumbled upon an art sale, and I found this crazy mixed media piece that I fell in love with. I finally ended up buying it because I just couldn’t leave without it. It’s an amazing mixed media piece made from found objects. The backing is an old piece of countertop, and there’s chicken wire and bits of metal and scrap wood. It just really makes me happy when I look at it. Here’s a drawing I did of the piece, and this is also done with my new watercolors. The piece is called The Getaway. 🙂

The Getaway

I think that’s it for now. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, and I sincerely hope that you have an amazing time, no matter how you decide to spend it. I’m looking forward to a long weekend! XOXO

Crack Pipe

It’s been a tumultuous week around here. Last Sunday morning, hubby & I awoke to the sound of water dripping. In our sleepy haze it took us a few minutes to realize that water was dripping into our closet from the door frame. Huh, weird. Mike rushed upstairs to see what was going on. The guest room and guest bathroom were SOAKED. The carpet was squishy and the ceramic tile had half an inch of standing water. While he was up there, I went downstairs to the basement. I was in a total panic when I stepped into the home theater to find the drop ceiling had collapsed and water was gushing out into the room and all over the furniture. What a mess! Mike got the water shut off so the gushing stopped, and we were able to walk around and sort of assess the damage. We had water on all 3 floors, and in nearly every room of the house. The only place that was completely dry was Mike’s man cave upstairs. The room was dry, but we later learned that the pipe that had frozen and cracked was actually in the attic behind the guest bathroom sink. The only access to the attic is through the man cave, so even that room wasn’t completely immune.

Here’s my drawing of me when I went into the basement, and also a photo of the tiny little cracked pipe that caused this whole mess.

The Culprit

We were lucky enough to get a plumber here very quickly who repaired the pipe and turned our water back on. We were also lucky enough to get a crew here in the afternoon who were obviously experts at water extraction, and they worked into the evening to try to get things dry. Mike & I holed up in the man cave with the cats and tried to relax. My poor Buffy – she’s such a neurotic little diva anyway, and I think this whole thing was harder on her than any of us. We did all we could do to try to keep her calm and reassured, including putting one of those pheromone collars on her. Nemo is ultra resilient so he just rolled with it. I wasn’t quite so lucky. After a few days of incredibly loud fans and dehumidifiers, I was having a very difficult time keeping it together. It’s hard enough to try to sleep with the cacophony of equipment, but this is also where I work. So I was sort of trapped here 24/7 under pretty crappy conditions. We all got through it, though, and by Friday, the crew removed all of the fans and equipment and we are officially dry! The next phase in the process will be dealing with contractors to replace lots of drywall, trim, carpet & pad, and paint. We still have a LONG way to go, but I think the worst is behind us.

On that note, here is some random artwork I’ve done recently that I thought I’d share. This is a quick selfie I did in pencil with a bit of watercolor.

Self Portrait

A quick drawing I did at my desk while I was working. I like to doodle when I’m on hold. Ink & highlighters because I used what I had on hand. 🙂

Also, my 365 sketch project is going well and I’m really enjoying it. Click this link to take a look at my progress: http://trishsworld.tumblr.com/.

In other news, the TWELFTH anniversary of this blog is rapidly approaching. I’m honestly a bit stunned to realize that so much time has passed! It’s still about a month out, but I’m thinking about it now because it’s time to renew my domain for another year or more. I remember sitting in our tiny closet of an apartment in Climax all those years ago teaching myself to code from an “HTML for Dummies!” book or something similar. And I had to think long and hard about investing $20 per year to have my own domain. Things have changed lots with all of the super easy blog building websites and I haven’t had to write any code for a long time now. I sort of miss it in some ways. Anyway, I’m rambling! I’ll take this walk down memory lane another time. 🙂

One last thing I want to mention – some really great friends of mine have started the new year with a bang, and they’ve decided to chronicle their journey via a blog – They’ve made a few posts so far, and it’s a pretty interesting read, so I encourage you to take a look! Click this link to see what the fuss is all about: http://bandthec.weebly.com/.

This post is sort of all over the place, but that’s a pretty perfect reflection of my life this week . As I mentioned in my last post, my word for the year is Adventure, and I’ve certainly had that in spades. 🙂

Until next time! XOXO

I Open at the Close

2014 is ending, and so is my 365 Photo Project for the year. It was so much fun! I feel super accomplished for having stuck with it, although I did miss a day in November. It was getting SO difficult to find a decent subject when I was housebound after surgery. 🙁 If you’re interested in a quick review of the Year of Trish in photos, click this link.

For 2015 I’m planning to do a 365 Sketch project. I got this great daily sketch book for Christmas that has 365 blank pages waiting to be filled with doodles, so it seems like the perfect situation. Right this minute, I’m planning to use the same Tumblr account just to make things easy, but I may change my mind. Either way, I’m excited to get started, and I hope that you’ll follow along!

Here’s a nice little pair of bookends for you – my first and last photos for 2014.

365 - 1/1/14

SMOOOCH

Smooches to you, my favorite people of all time, not just 2014. I hope that your new year brings everything that you’ve dreamed of and more. As for me, I’m ringing in 2015 my favorite way – In my PJ’s, drinking delightful beers, and hanging out at home. XOXO

EDIT: I’ve decided to use a different Tumblr for the 365 Sketch Project! You can follow along here: http://trishsworld.tumblr.com
