Catch Me, I’m Falling

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m exhausted today. It’s been a long, stressful week and my excitement for the weekend is palpable. Here’s this week’s Friday Five – enjoy!

  • When did you last trip and fall?

The last time I remember was January 2014. I slid on a patch of ice walking into my office building. Luckily, I wasn’t hurt with the exceptions of a skinned knee and my pride. Of course, I drew a picture of it. 🙂

Digger. :(

  • What’s a fond memory you have of this past autumn?

So many to choose from! Last fall I went to Myrtle Beach, Louisville, 3 beer festivals, the Willy Wonka Party, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Huey Lewis & the News, and a killer Halloween party. My favorite fall event was my day in Traverse City, though. I spent the morning shopping and exploring all by myself and the afternoon and evening with some great friends. Read all about it here: http://www.trishsworld.com/blog/2014/10/traverse-adventure/

  • What’s a nice waterfall you’ve visited?

I haven’t been to very many, but I’m pretty sure that Niagara Falls takes the cake. It was truly incredible. I’d really like to get to Tahquamenon Falls in the UP one of these days, though.

Chillin

  • What are your thoughts on Jimmy Fallon as host of The Tonight Show?

I don’t watch late night TV; I never really have. From the internet clips I’ve seen here and there, he seems very funny, though. I liked him on SNL. I’m maybe a little partial to Conan since he actually talks about me on his show. 😉

  • Who has most recently fallen out of your favor?

I can think of a couple of examples, but I wouldn’t call anyone out in a public forum like this. I’m too sweet. 🙂

A couple of other quick notes – This blog turned TWELVE YEARS OLD this week. I’m sort of in shock. It’s been quite a ride. Happy Blogiversary to ME!

I’ve been reading lately! I’m enjoying it, and it’s been fun to discover some new and interesting books.  I’ve also gotten back into knitting! My creative passions have always gone in these weird, unpredictable cycles, and beautiful, soft, colorful fibers are pushing themselves to the forefront lately. I’ve had a few crochet projects on the hooks for a while – long term afghans that I work on occasionally while I watch telly. I’ve picked up the pace on those as well, so maybe I’ll even have something finished to show off here in the near future! As usual, I feel like there isn’t enough time in the day for me to create all of the things I want to create and to act on all of the ideas that float around in my brain. I want to write, paint, draw, blog, vlog, knit, crochet, bookbind, needle felt, and a million other things. 🙂

I hope that you have an amazing and relaxing weekend. XOXO

Rows & Rows & Rows

I wanted to give you a quick update on my sock yarn binky. I’ve been working on it here and there and I’ve made some progress. I’m really happy with the way it’s looking! I like it SO much better than the original sock yarn binky I was working on. It was a log cabin style which just didn’t suit the scrappy multi-colored yarn. This rectangular granny square pattern is much prettier, and honestly, more fun to work on as well. This thing is still going to take me forever to finish, but that’s to be expected when you make an entire afghan with fingering weight yarn. As you can see, there are about a zillion ends to weave in, so that will take me another 378563498 years to finish. 🙂

I have another scrap afghan going right now as well. It’s also crochet, but it’s worsted weight yarn. I’ll post some pictures of that one pretty soon, too.

Here’s a couple of pics – first the whole thing, and then a nice close-up. I hope you’re having a wonderful week. XOXO

Oy With the Poodles Already!

The last couple of weeks have been sort of eventful, so here’s a catch up of the haps. After Friday 12/21, I was off work until after the first of the year, as was Mike. We started our vacation off with a bang – The Peaches were in town, so we got to spend some time with them, which is always a pleasure. Peach Pit is still a complete jerk (yet somehow lovable) and Peach Fuzz is still adorable & sweet. I sure wish those kids still lived around here so I could see them more often. Anyway, the old gang hit the town and we had a ball. Also, I wore a dress! That’s pretty big news! I only took one picture the entire night, but it’s a DOOZY. Peach Pit is so pasty white that I think the flash scared him.

 Peach Pit

We spent Christmas Eve at our house with my family, and it was nice. We ate, opened presents, ate dessert, and then chit chatted for quite a while. It was a very nice afternoon. Christmas Day was spent in Grand Rapids with Mike’s family, and that was really nice, too. It was a madhouse with a zillion people, but a really great madhouse. The kids got walkie talkies so that was fun!

The day after Christmas I woke up and my throat was sore – I felt like I swallowed broken glass. I shook it off fairly quickly though, and Mike & I ran a few errands. My throat never felt great, but I managed. Well, things went rapidly downhill from there! I got worse and worse and ended up spending the rest of the week and the weekend either in bed or on the couch. I was MISERABLE! It was completely horrible to spend my vacation sick. I was able to catch up on all my DVR’d shows, though, which is the only plus. I am still a couple of Vampire Diaries behind, and I haven’t watched any of this season’s Gossip Girl yet, but what the hay, it was cancelled anyway so I’ve got all the time in the world now, right? I also got sucked into a Gilmore Girls re-watch, and man oh man, do I love the hell out of that show. I think the entire series is up there with Veronica Mars season 1 for best show ever ever ever of all time. I managed to get some work done on my sock yarn binky as well. It’s coming along nicely.

So, I rang in the new year with Mike at home – we watched the ball drop, and I drank about 3 sips of a beer before deciding I couldn’t finish it and dumping it. So yeah, I was THAT SICK. Mike did drag me out of the house on New Year’s Day – it was our last vacation day so we went out for lunch and made a quick trip to Target for some supplies, but we headed home right afterward because I was still feeling pretty pooptastic. I DID score this amazing furry hat/scarf combo that has ears AND a hot pink lining. I am definitely wearing it to the Winter Beer Festival next month. I know this is an awful pic, but I was wicked sick and the lighting was bad, and you will just have to deal:

I am not even 2 months past my foot surgery to correct the bunion, but Mike & I have decided we want to be runners, so we are going to start the Couch to 5K program next week. I am not 100% sold on the idea that I will ever be a “runner” but I think it’ll be fun to try. I honestly have no idea how my foot will do, but hey, I’m going to give this a whirl and see where it takes me. Everone I know who runs has said that they never thought they would be a runner or enjoy running and then they ended up being in love with it. Maybe that’s me! I have a sneaking suspicion that it IS NOT, but we shall see. And again, there is the whole question of my foot – I am not sure that it’s even up for it. I’ll know more next week when I try the program for the first time. I’ll give you a full report.

I think that’s it for now. I hope your 2013 is freaking epic.

Sock Yarn Binky Version 2.0

I’ve been working on my sock yarn binky. After that horrific log cabin fiasco, I decided to try crochet this time around. I’m doing the rectangular granny square pattern, which I love and have done a few times before. This baby has a long way to go, but I’m really pleased with it so far. I don’t think it’s ugly this time! But, hey, I’ve been wrong before. 🙂

For those interested, this is all fingering weight yarn scraps and I’m using a size 1/B hook.

I Wanna Touch You

There’s really not too much going around here lately. I’ve been feeling quite the surge of creativity, so I’ve been drawing, painting, knitting and crocheting quite a bit. As far as yarny stuff, I’m hip-deep in baby projects right now for a couple of upcoming showers. I’m working on baby blankets, sleep sacks and baby washcloths. I’ve also made a few hand painted postcards that I mailed out on Monday. I can’t post them here yet, I want to wait until the recipients get them first.

Unfortunately, all of this creativity has not re-sparked my interest in my 365 photo project. I got my camera back, and I really thought being without it was the issue, but as it turns out, it wasn’t.  I’m super sad that I made it this far only to lose momentum for the project as a whole. But at the same time, I don’t want to force myself because I’ll just end up with a ton of crappy photos. I went back to my original post back in December 2010 announcing this project and read through it. I had a few goals. These are directly lifted from that post.

  • Learn a little more about photography – I love photographs and I enjoy taking pictures a lot. I’d like to make the pics I do take come out a little better. I don’t have a fancy camera, nor do I feel I need one. I just want to take good pictures. Hopefully better ones than I took this year.
  • Get better at photo editing – There are a couple of tools that I use pretty consistently, but I want to be able to learn and do more with them, and maybe even use some other tools as well.
  • Have a cool photo album of my 2011 – I’m excited about how a photo a day will look after an entire year and 365 photos are done.
  • Have fun!!

I would say that I easily met all of these goals except, of course, the 2011 photo album. But I’m pretty OK with that. Also, just for clarity’s sake – I’m not completely giving up on this, I’m just not going to force myself to do it. I will continue to post pictures throughout the year at the photo blog, but it most likely won’t be every day. I guess I just really need to learn the lesson that when I take something really fun and put to much structure and deadlines and expectations around it, it really isn’t that much fun anymore.

So that’s it for now. I hope you’re having the best week ever. 🙂

Fugly Frog

I’m seriously considering frogging my sock yarn binky. In fact, I already ripped some of it out. Yes, I know, it’s at leat 40% done, which was a TON of time and work. Click here to see the latest pics, although it’s gotten quite a bit larger since those were taken.

Here’s the deal. I’ve been working on this thing for well over a year, adding bits of sock yarn here and there. The other night, I was working on it, and Mike came around, so I paused. I unfurled the mass of sock yarns and said, “Hey, check out my binky. What do you think?” He said “Ummm, it’s eclectic.” ECLECTIC? I know what that means – ASS UGLY. How did I not realize that this thing is hideous?? I think I was so close to it, and working on it so diligently – focusing on the additions and the new bits instead of the entire monstrosity. Somehow I missed the fact that it’s super fugly, and now that I’ve noticed, it’s all I can see.

So anyway, it’s hitting the frog pond. I’m thinking about a crochet sock yarn binky – it will be just stripes. I’m definitely swatching this time because I don’t want this to happen again. By the way, TYVM internets, for letting me post pictures of that mess for the last year and never even bothering to leave an anonymous comment to let me know that perhaps my time was better spent on other projects.

Flower Garden

Here’s a card I made. The flowers are hand crocheted. I love this idea, and I think it turned out great, but there’s something missing. Maybe I need to watercolor the background? Something is not quite right and I haven’t put my finger on it yet. Open to suggestions of course.

Tree Guy #2 came over last night, and so far, he is my hero. He is going to fix everything for a more than reasonable price, plus he gave us more information in the 10 minutes he was here than I got in the weeks of dealing with the other dudes. So hooray for Tree Guy #2. I can’t wait until I can sit at my desk and look out my window into the backyard and not see a gaping hole and a huge pile of random woood along with heaps of wood chips and dirt.

Snow Hood

Here’s yet another new item! This is hand crocheted in a navy blue wool blend yarn. It ties under the chin with a grosgrain ribbon. Perfect for snowy blustery days because it’s very thick and warm, and will cover your ears. As you can see, Wanda loves it, but I think it’s actually a teensy bit big for her. She has (well IS, I guess) a small head.

This tree removal business has just been awful. I don’t even have the energy to go into the whole thing again right now, but we are still dealing with it. We actually have another tree service coming over this evening to see if they can take care of the mess the first dudes left behind. Being a homeowner really sucks sometimes. Boo.

Granny Rectangle

I’ve been working on this afghan for a while, and I finally finished it in time to give it to my niece, Alexis, for a graduation gift. I really hope that she digs it. And also that she isn’t reading this. 🙂 The colors didn’t turn out right in the pics at all, it’s much brighter & cheerier in person. There is bubblegum pink and lime green. The photos seem much more muted than reality. But you get the idea. Her party is tomorrow night & I’m excited to give it to her.

Fiber Fetish

I decided to start a freeform fiber project. I’ve been thinking about this for a while. A long while actually, a couple of years. Basically, it is just kind of a fun project to help build my skills and also create something totally unique and fun. I will work on it every day for a few minutes and add a little bit to it using every trick in my fiber arsenal. Knitting, crochet, needle felting, loom knitting, hairpin lace and more. I’m pretty excited. I am documenting the project on Flickr, but I probably will not update it here every day. Probably more like once every couple of weeks. Anyway, I’m excited about this. I think it will be fun. What will I do with the finished piece? No idea. I’ll have to see what it wants to be, I guess. 🙂

I had a pedicure this morning with my girlfriend Heather. It was SO great to catch up with her because it had been forever. Plus, my toes look HAWT, I picked a dark magenta that is totally rocking.

I’m sitting here watching the huge fluffy snowflakes fall, and it is so beautiful. Too bad I have chores that need to be done.
