The Funk of 40,000 Years

I’m in a funk, dudes. I’ve lost my creative mojo and I can’t seem to figure out where it went, or more importantly, how to get it back. I’m still drawing every day. I’m keeping up my 365 Sketch Project, and I’m keeping up on my regular daily visual journal. But my heart isn’t in it. I don’t feel the same zeal for either project at the moment.

For about the last month or so, I go to my studio lair when I have time and I sit there. I flip through stacks of papers and paints and fondle my paint brushes and daydream and watch art videos and sit there some more until I eventually emerge a couple of hours later with little to nothing accomplished. I WANT to create and I WANT to be creative, but somehow my muse eludes me. Actually, I NEED to create. Art is my emotional outlet, and without it, I feel sort of lost and rudderless.

Inspiration is an interesting little beastie. There are times when I have so many ideas that my hands can’t even work fast enough and I have to write down scraps of thoughts and plans for things I want to do so I won’t forget. And then there are times like this where the idea snippets are still floating all around me but my imagination just can’t seem to find a spark in any of them.

I’m not sure what to do. The weather has been chilly the last couple of days, and I’ve been thinking about sweaters and boots and steamy mugs of hot cocoa, so I think maybe I’ll paw through my yarn stash and start knitting  up a scarf. Or maybe even some of my crazy funky technicolor patchwork mittens? I think this pair was my all-time favorite – Mittasaurus Rex. 🙂

If you have any brilliant ideas or suggestions for how to find inspiration and get my creative groove back, I’m all ears. I hope that you’re having a great week! XOXO

Catch Me, I’m Falling

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m exhausted today. It’s been a long, stressful week and my excitement for the weekend is palpable. Here’s this week’s Friday Five – enjoy!

  • When did you last trip and fall?

The last time I remember was January 2014. I slid on a patch of ice walking into my office building. Luckily, I wasn’t hurt with the exceptions of a skinned knee and my pride. Of course, I drew a picture of it. 🙂

Digger. :(

  • What’s a fond memory you have of this past autumn?

So many to choose from! Last fall I went to Myrtle Beach, Louisville, 3 beer festivals, the Willy Wonka Party, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Huey Lewis & the News, and a killer Halloween party. My favorite fall event was my day in Traverse City, though. I spent the morning shopping and exploring all by myself and the afternoon and evening with some great friends. Read all about it here: http://www.trishsworld.com/blog/2014/10/traverse-adventure/

  • What’s a nice waterfall you’ve visited?

I haven’t been to very many, but I’m pretty sure that Niagara Falls takes the cake. It was truly incredible. I’d really like to get to Tahquamenon Falls in the UP one of these days, though.

  • What are your thoughts on Jimmy Fallon as host of The Tonight Show?

I don’t watch late night TV; I never really have. From the internet clips I’ve seen here and there, he seems very funny, though. I liked him on SNL. I’m maybe a little partial to Conan since he actually talks about me on his show. 😉

  • Who has most recently fallen out of your favor?

I can think of a couple of examples, but I wouldn’t call anyone out in a public forum like this. I’m too sweet. 🙂

A couple of other quick notes – This blog turned TWELVE YEARS OLD this week. I’m sort of in shock. It’s been quite a ride. Happy Blogiversary to ME!

I’ve been reading lately! I’m enjoying it, and it’s been fun to discover some new and interesting books.  I’ve also gotten back into knitting! My creative passions have always gone in these weird, unpredictable cycles, and beautiful, soft, colorful fibers are pushing themselves to the forefront lately. I’ve had a few crochet projects on the hooks for a while – long term afghans that I work on occasionally while I watch telly. I’ve picked up the pace on those as well, so maybe I’ll even have something finished to show off here in the near future! As usual, I feel like there isn’t enough time in the day for me to create all of the things I want to create and to act on all of the ideas that float around in my brain. I want to write, paint, draw, blog, vlog, knit, crochet, bookbind, needle felt, and a million other things. 🙂

I hope that you have an amazing and relaxing weekend. XOXO

I Wanna Touch You

There’s really not too much going around here lately. I’ve been feeling quite the surge of creativity, so I’ve been drawing, painting, knitting and crocheting quite a bit. As far as yarny stuff, I’m hip-deep in baby projects right now for a couple of upcoming showers. I’m working on baby blankets, sleep sacks and baby washcloths. I’ve also made a few hand painted postcards that I mailed out on Monday. I can’t post them here yet, I want to wait until the recipients get them first.

Unfortunately, all of this creativity has not re-sparked my interest in my 365 photo project. I got my camera back, and I really thought being without it was the issue, but as it turns out, it wasn’t.  I’m super sad that I made it this far only to lose momentum for the project as a whole. But at the same time, I don’t want to force myself because I’ll just end up with a ton of crappy photos. I went back to my original post back in December 2010 announcing this project and read through it. I had a few goals. These are directly lifted from that post.

  • Learn a little more about photography – I love photographs and I enjoy taking pictures a lot. I’d like to make the pics I do take come out a little better. I don’t have a fancy camera, nor do I feel I need one. I just want to take good pictures. Hopefully better ones than I took this year.
  • Get better at photo editing – There are a couple of tools that I use pretty consistently, but I want to be able to learn and do more with them, and maybe even use some other tools as well.
  • Have a cool photo album of my 2011 – I’m excited about how a photo a day will look after an entire year and 365 photos are done.
  • Have fun!!

I would say that I easily met all of these goals except, of course, the 2011 photo album. But I’m pretty OK with that. Also, just for clarity’s sake – I’m not completely giving up on this, I’m just not going to force myself to do it. I will continue to post pictures throughout the year at the photo blog, but it most likely won’t be every day. I guess I just really need to learn the lesson that when I take something really fun and put to much structure and deadlines and expectations around it, it really isn’t that much fun anymore.

So that’s it for now. I hope you’re having the best week ever. 🙂

Fugly Frog

I’m seriously considering frogging my sock yarn binky. In fact, I already ripped some of it out. Yes, I know, it’s at leat 40% done, which was a TON of time and work. Click here to see the latest pics, although it’s gotten quite a bit larger since those were taken.

Here’s the deal. I’ve been working on this thing for well over a year, adding bits of sock yarn here and there. The other night, I was working on it, and Mike came around, so I paused. I unfurled the mass of sock yarns and said, “Hey, check out my binky. What do you think?” He said “Ummm, it’s eclectic.” ECLECTIC? I know what that means – ASS UGLY. How did I not realize that this thing is hideous?? I think I was so close to it, and working on it so diligently – focusing on the additions and the new bits instead of the entire monstrosity. Somehow I missed the fact that it’s super fugly, and now that I’ve noticed, it’s all I can see.

So anyway, it’s hitting the frog pond. I’m thinking about a crochet sock yarn binky – it will be just stripes. I’m definitely swatching this time because I don’t want this to happen again. By the way, TYVM internets, for letting me post pictures of that mess for the last year and never even bothering to leave an anonymous comment to let me know that perhaps my time was better spent on other projects.

Binky Update

I just wanted to post a quick update on my sock yarn binky project. This one is an old timer – I started it in April 2010! It’s getting pretty big – at 31 x 34 inches, it’s big enough to keep my lap nice and warm while I’m working on it. It’s very easy and relaxing to knit, and I am happy with the way it’s turning out. So colorful and cheery.

I still have lots of scraps left, but not enough to finish it I don’t think. So I guess I need to get my butt in gear on some fingering weight projects!! I have a fingering weight scarf on the needles now, so that will help. Plus, it’s a beautiful colorway that is orange, peach and a bit of blue. I also have a pair of grey socks on the needles that I need to finish. This is going to take me another couple of years probably, so I’m sure I’ll scrounge up enough sock yarn bits in the meantime. I also already have plans for another sock yarn binky when I finish this one, but it will be crochet.

Life-Changing Cake

First off, Snowpocalypse 2011 was kind of a disappointment. We did get a lot of snow – about 12-14 inches I’d guess – and the winds were pretty strong. Everything else that was foretold by the news was mostly hype, though. Shovelling the driveway was a chore – it took all 3 of us working in shifts to get in done. Also, all the schools around here were closed for at least 1 day, Mike got to work from home that day, and plenty of places were closed. Unfortunately, when you work from home, there is no such thing as a snow day unless the internet goes down, which it didn’t. So that took a little bit of the fun out of the whole thing for me. 🙁

Our weekend was fairly uneventful. On Saturday I went to a baby shower for my friend Jordan who is due next month. I knitted her a baby blanket in chocolate brown since they are keeping the gender a surprise. She seemed to really like it. My mom & I played all the games, including sniffing melted chocolate out of baby diapers. We had a good time, it was a lovely shower.

After the shower, Mike & I went out for a bite to eat. After much deliberation, we settled on Cracker Barrel. Man, I love Cracker Barrel. The food reminds me so much of my grandma’s cooking. I had turnip greens and baby lima beans, and both had big pieces of pork in them, and they were so good. I also splurged and got dessert – they had the Coca-Cola Double Chocolate Cake!! If you know me at all, you know I am a cake afficianado, so it’s high praise when I say that this is probably the best cake I’ve ever had. It will seriously change your life. For the better.  It’s so moist that it almost falls apart and so rich it makes your teeth hurt – Just the way I like it!! Anyway, we had a really fun little date and enjoyed some yummy food together.

Those are the highlights of our weekend – I told you it was uneventful. A couple of other quick updates: I’m STILL reading that same book, Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs. It has not gotten any better and that’s why it’s taking me forever to get through it. I’m actually considering re-reading Twilight AGAIN just so I can be done with this book. As for TV, I’m rewatching Battlestar Galactica via Netflix. I just started and I’m not even through the miniseries yet, but seriously – I forgot how great this show is. Even if you aren’t into Sci-Fi, you should consider giving it a try. Really great writing, good acting, and high WTF factor make for a really compelling show. At least watch the miniseries (It’s 2 parts and both are available to stream as part of Season 1 on Netflix).

Christmas Through Lowell

I’m heading out this afternoon for the big show in Lowell. Check out the details here if you’re interested. It doesn’t start until tomorrow but I have much set up stuff to do this evening. I’ll be at stop #9 (typing that #9 made me thirsty :)) on the map, so if you’re in the area this weekend, please pop in and say hello! We will be open Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

I finally started a new book – I’m reading the first book in the Artemis Fowl series. I’m only a few chapters in, but so far I like it. I am also pretty sure that my fancy pants Sony e-reader is on it’s way out. Lately it will just randomly shut itself down and then re-boot, which is annoying in itself, but the worst thing is that it doesn’t remember where I left off after it restarts. Then I have to go flipping around until I find the right page! I am thinking I’ll need a new reader soon – any suggestions? Best Buy will be selling the Nook pretty cheap in the Black Friday sales, but I don’t really know a ton about it. And what about the Kindle?? If you have either one (or something else), let me know what you think.

Also, I recently joined Foursquare – if you are using it and you aren’t already my friend, hit me up so we can connect!!
