You Better Work

Yesterday I participated in a photo shoot at the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange, a local bar. They’re redoing they’re website and were looking for local people to model for them so I submitted a couple of photos on a whim and they picked me. It was crazy because as soon as I got there and met all the other models I realized I was easily the oldest person in the room. I understand why they asked me to participate because I’m sure they want to market themselves to people in my age group, but damn. I felt a little awkward posing for pictures with a bunch of twentysomethings. I sort of felt like the older sister at times. Anyway, it was actually pretty fun, and I even got paid! Here are some of the photos I took. The makeup artist did an amazing job, but I’m not used to wearing anywhere near that amount of makeup, so my lashes felt super crunchy for the rest of the day. 🙂

Practicing our best Blue Steel:

 Blue Steel 4/6/14

This was a really fun experience overall, and I’d do it again in a second. I can’t wait until the website is up so I can see if they even used any photos of me. 🙂

I also want to give you a quick update on Sketchbook Skool. I’ve seen the entire first week’s worth of lessons, and there were some pretty big AHA moments for me already. One of the biggest pieces of homework for this week is to draw with pen. Commit to what you’re drawing. No pencil and more importantly, no eraser. This is easily the most challenging thing I’ve done in a while, but I’m giving it a go. I’ve always used pencil to sketch, then inked my drawings, and then erased the pencil, so ink alone is like a whole new world! A very difficult world! Here are a couple of quick ink sketches that I’ve done so far. They’re actually better than I expected them to be. I did add a little bit of colored pencil after the fact, but that’s allowed. 🙂

So far, this class is great. I’m enjoying it, and it’s helping me to stretch creatively, which is nice. I think my mojo is coming back! Stay tuned!

Have a great week!

Learning & Improving

I’m pretty excited to say that I signed up for the first semester of Sketchbook Skool! If you aren’t familiar with it, watch this video.

Sketchbook Skool – the film from DannyGregory on Vimeo.

I truly could not be more geeked for this class to start. I’ve seen online art classes before and I’m always skeptical. I’ve admired Danny Gregory’s work for a long time, and this class really intrigued me. I heard about it several weeks ago, and I must have watched this video 100 times, but today I finally pulled the trigger and enrolled. 🙂 If you are planning on taking the class as well, let me know! I’d love to connect with people outside of class.

In other news, January and February are gone and I’m proud to say that my 365 project is going strong and I haven’t missed a single day! To follow the project, click this link. I don’t want to post every photo here, but this one stands out as a favorite!

Super Beer Friends

My besties and I went to the Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Festival last weekend in Grand Rapids. It was AMAZING, as always. We had a blast! There were 2 standout beers for me – both from Our Brewing in Holland, MI – the Careless Whisper IPA, and the Tobacconist Porter. OUTSTANDING. These guys also made my favorite beer at last year’s fest, the Andes Mint Chocolate Stout. I definitely need to get my butt to Holland to check them out!! Usually at the festival my friend Dawn & I sort of stick together and do our own thing, but this year it was a real social event. ALL of the Super Beer Friends were there, a couple of them for the first time ever! It was a long day and we nearly missed our bus home, but I loved every second of it. I’m already counting the days until next year!!

Lastly, I want to say that today is actually the 3 year anniversary of my officially keeping a daily illustrated journal. I was sort of doing it before that, but not in any organized way. March 1st is the day I decided to start with a new book and draw and write about every single day of my life. This is the very first page from that book, dated March 1, 2011. I look at this drawing, and it literally amazes me how far I’ve come since then! This drawing is so awful in so many ways! To anyone who thinks that you have to have some sort of natural talent to be an artist – here’s the proof that you don’t! I’ve just practiced every single day, even if only for a few minutes. I enjoyed it so I just kept doing it, and still do. This drawing not only makes me realize how much I’ve improved, but it also makes me feel so excited for how much better I can still get. What will my drawings look like in another 3 years?? I can’t wait to find out! (This is for sure one of those cringe moments I talked about in my last post – and I can’t figure out how to make it NOT HUGE.)

Shutterly Amazing

Happy New Year!! I sincerely hope it’s your best yet. I’m not huge on resolutions, but I think a new year is always a bit of a fresh start. It’s a great time for reflection and looking at where you’ve been, where you’re going and trying to figure out how to get closer to being the person that you ultimately want to be. I spent new year’s eve in front of a fire, drinking a beer and reading through all of my journals for 2013. It was pretty enlightening. Looking over the entire year, day by day, in the span of a couple of hours really made some things clear that I didn’t notice as the days went by in real time. The first thing that stood out was that I hated my job. I knew vaguely that I wasn’t happy there and that I wanted to make a change, but I also felt sort of trapped because I didn’t know how to fix it. As I read through, almost every day in the last 6 months I wrote about work negatively, and then in the same entries wrote about how I didn’t feel well or that I wasn’t sleeping or that my headaches were so bad I couldn’t do anything but lay in bed and cry. I got the offer letter from my new company on 11/18/13, and since that day, it’s like reading a different person’s journal. Happy, smiles, sleeping like a baby, fun, no headaches. It’s also amazing to read through as old relationships grow and get stronger with time, brand new ones form and gain momentum, and some slip away entirely for various reasons.

I know there are some of you who wonder why I am so meticulous about my journals and keeping track of even the most mundane of days, but this is why. I sincerely believe that every single person on this planet can learn so much about themselves by doing this. You don’t have to be an artist – that’s just my quirk. If I thought people would appreciate and utilize it, I would have given every single adult on my Christmas list a nice notebook and a nice pen. But I know that isn’t realistic because it’s just not for everyone. However, if you’re reading this and you feel like you want to know more or have questions or even think that journal keeping MIGHT be something you want to take a stab at, let me know. I’d love to help you get started. My 2013 pile of journals:

In another note, my girlfriends Dawn, Holly & I are doing a 365 project this year! I don’t think I’ll post the pictures here every day, but I might do a weekly recap or something on this blog. I’m not sure how it’ll play out for now. We set up a Tumblr, so please feel free to bookmark it and follow us: http://shoottheshit365.tumblr.com/. I also added a link to the sidebar here just in case you lose it. We’d love to have you along for what I’m sure will be a crazy ride. 🙂

So here’s my picture for today – I got lucky this morning when 5 deer decided to have a late brekkie of the bushes in our backyard. They’re covered with snow, which I love, plus they look so cool with their thicker winter fur. Enjoy and I hope today is the start of an amazing year for you. XOXO

We Boldly Went

I don’t have a ton of time to write everything I want right now, but here are the money shots at least. 🙂 More soon, I promise!!

Burrfy the Lap Kitty

In the last few days, I’ve gotten some really nice pictures of Buffy. This is notable because A) I’m a crazy cat lady and B) because her fur is so dark, it’s really difficult to get good photos of her. If the lighting isn’t just right, she just looks like a big black puddle. Nemo is a creamy tan, so he’s easy.

Anyway, I’m pretty stoked about these, so I thought I’d share.

 Face Lick

Caught her licking her face! Ha! So cute.

She looks all deep in thought, but she’s probably just wondering if it’s almost time for her next meal. 🙂

Almost asleep on my lap.

Tails From the Zoo

Last Saturday I went to the zoo with my sister, my nephew Noah, my dad, and my 2nd cousin Taigen. We had a really good time! It was rainy all morning, so I wasn’t sure how the day would turn out, but it was perfect. As we drove to the zoo, the skies cleared up, and the sun came out. Plus, there was a nice breeze that kept us from getting too hot. Here’s Noah and Taigen hamming it up with a statue at the entrance.John Ball Statue

Even though it’s decidedly Fall in Michigan, most of the animals were still around. The lemurs and some of the tropical birds have already moved to their winter homes, but the big cats were still there, so I was happy. There was a beautiful bobcat, but he was pacing around so fast that all my pictures turned out blurry. The lion was really cool, though! It came right up to the glass and roared at us! So pretty. The lion was definitely my favorite animal that we saw.

For the kids, they got to do some really cool things. They were able to pet the stingrays, which they both thought was pretty cool. In the petting zoo, they brushed a goat and chased the chickens a bit. When we came around to the pelicans, it happened to be feeding time, so the zookeeper let the kids feed the pelicans their dinner! She gave them a bucket of fish and let them toss the fish at the pelicans. Awesome!!

Here are a few more pictures from our exciting trip. We had a blast! Click to see larger.

And possibly my favorite photo of the day: the kids on the way home.

Me & Mikey, originally uploaded by trishsworld.

Last Saturday, Mike & I managed to hit 2 weddings in one day. It was kind of a whirlwind, and when all was said & done, I feel like we missed the best parts of both.

I snapped this Instagrammy photo of the 2 of us as we enjoyed some appetizers at wedding number 2.

Congrats to Cameron & Amy and Casey & Emily!

Boba Freaking Fett

Yesterday, I needed to go to the grocery store, and I wasn’t really feeling it. First of all, it was raining. Getting groceries in the rain SUCKS. Plus, I just didn’t feel like it. Rainy days make me want to curl up and read, not get drenched trying to load a ton of crap into the back of my car. Anyway, I tried to convince Mike to go instead of me. He wasn’t buying it. So I put on the full court press – I told him it was Boba Fett Day at the grocery store, and if he didn’t go, he miss out on the chance to finally meet Boba Fett! He was skeptical, so I really laid it on the line and told him that Boba was giving rides in Slave 1, too. He STILL would not go to the store – I actually think he might not have believed me.

So I braved the rains all by myself to get the food that we needed. Boy, did Mike miss out!!

Me & Boba FettHere’s me and Boba Fett. I did take a ride on Slave 1, which was amazing, but Boba doesn’t allow photos of the inside of the ship. This picture will have to do. I texted it to Mike from the grocery store after meeting Boba, and believe it or not, he was still skeptical!! As if I would doctor a photo or something. He even asked me why there was kind of a haze around my hair (you mean my halo??) but I explained to him that they used one of those soft focus lenses to make me look dreamy and romantic.

Anyway, I hope Mike learned his lesson. Especially since next week is Optimus Prime Day.

Anything at All

If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. So yeah, I think that sums it up. For giggles, here’s a fun picture I took of Nemo the other day witth an Android app called Cartoon Camera, then I edited it with PicMonkey. It made me feel a wee bit better.
