The Game is Afoot

I had surgery on Tuesday and it went very well. I didn’t have a general anesthetic, and apparently I kept waking up and asking questions, but I only vaguely remember it. I do remember at the end as I was coming around, I kept saying “My foot is hot. Why is my foot so hot?” They would explain that it was the plaster they were putting on and then 3 seconds later I’d ask the same questions again. 🙂

I’m pleased to report that I had almost no pain at all, in fact I only took Tylenol once, and nothing any stronger. I had X-rays on Friday and everything looks perfect, plus I got a real cast. I can’t put any weight on my foot until this next Saturday, but overall things are good. I’m pretty bored and sick of sitting around, but I’ve been really spoiled by The Best Husband Ever and some really really great friends. I’ve also been doing lots of drawing, which has been fun. Here are a few doodles from my daily journal.

I guess that’s it for now. Back to drawing and watching all of Netflix. I started watching Scandal – it’s really quite good. XOXO

Bring Your Green Hat

Jennifer Garner was on Conan last week, and out of the blue, she mentioned my name! It’s been about 20 years since I’ve seen her, and 10 years since I’ve heard from her, so it was a complete shock! She & I were pretty close, and I remember both of us crying the day that she moved out. She always called me Trisher, and I still have letters that she sent me that say “Dear Trisher.” 🙂

Anyway, here’s the video clip, just for posterity’s sake.

One thing I’ll say about Jen is that she is truly as sweet as she seems – she’s the real deal. Also, several people have asked me if I streaked at the Barn Theatre, too. The answer is no. At least not at the Barn Theatre. 😉

Sith Stalker

Last weekend, Mike, Clovis & I went to Detroit for the Detroit Fanfare comic book show. It was really awesome! As soon as we pulled up to the hotel, we saw all these amazing iconic cars from TV & movies. Coincidentally, Mike & I started watching the original Knight Rider on Netflix a couple of weeks ago, so we were SUPER STOKED to see KITT there!

Of course, we also ran into my Sith Stalker, the one & only Darth Vader. Here’s me & him, AGAIN, plus some of the previous times he’s stalked me in the last year.

Sith StalkerThe show was really fun, we had a great time. We really didn’t buy anything, but we saw some great cosplay action, which I love, and we even got to meet John DiMaggio who is the voice actor behind Jake from Adventure Time and Bender from Futurama. Plus, we ran into Brian O’Halloran (Dante from Clerks). He was super nice – we bumped into him just wandering around the con and he was very friendly, posed for a pic with Clovis and shook all of our hands.

Clovis & Brian O'Halloran from Clerks

Overall, it was a really fun day! This was our second time at this con, and I think we’ll keep going back.

In other news, Mike & I finally found some furniture for the basement that we really liked, so we pulled the trigger. It was delivered last week, and it’s SO GREAT to have our basement TV room back!! Here’s what our new sectional looks like. All of the pieces are floating, which means you can move and rearrange all of the pieces on the fly. So far, we are loving it.

That’s it for now, gang. I hope your Halloween is terrifyingly fantastic! Watch out for tricks!!

Trek Dreams

Mike & I went to the Official Star Trek Convention in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. It was AMAZING. I’ve heard about these things going on forever and I’ve always thought it would be cool to go to one, but I never really thought I would. I am a Next Gen girl all the way, and when I heard that the entire main cast was going to be at this convention, AND that they were doing a reunion show with all of them on stage at once, AND it was all happening only a few hours away from my house?? I knew this was it.

We got the tickets for this several months ago, so I’ve been anxiously awaiting this for quite a while. To help me deal with the anticipation, I worked on what I would wear to the con. First, I knew I wanted to make a skirt, so I planned and imagined and came up with something that I’m really happy with. I also decided to make a pair of TNG shoes. Yes, shoes. I bought the shoes at a thrift store, and then I covered them in bits of TNG comic books. They were a big hit, to say the least. Nana Visitor (Major Kira from DS9) was fascinated with them, and so was Arlene Martel (T’Pring in TOS episode Amok Time). Here’s a picture of me in my outfit, and a close-up of the shoes.

Star Trek Convention Day 1Star Trek Shoe

Day 0 – We arrived at the hotel/convention center on Thursday night. We pre-registered, got our convention badges, and then went to the vendors area and looked around a bit while they were setting up. I was surprised at how small the vendor area was – only 10 or 12 booths. I was so excited I knew I wouldn’t sleep, so we hit the hotel gym at 12:30 for a quick workout. I passed a dude in the hallway on the way back to my room who was wearing a Star Trek bathrobe. YES! These are my people!

I played Star Trek Trivia!Day1 – Friday. Today went by in a flash. Here are the highlights. Jeffrey Combs onstage (Weyoun & Brunt on DS9, Shran in ENT) was very cool & funny. He is just approachable and nice. We got his autograph and he was chatty. We met Ethan Phillips (Neelix on VOY plus a million other things) and he is also very sweet and funny. I chatted with Arlene Martel who was T”pring in one of my favorite Star Trek episodes EVER, TOS Amok Time. Again, so sweet, she loved my shoes & skirt. We got autographs from Vaughn Armstrong (Admiral Forrest ENT), and Casey Biggs (Damar DS9). I played a Star Trek Yes or No Trivia Game, but I didn’t win. I was eliminated on a question about the original airdate of the first episode of TNG. Boo! Crazy fun day, we snuck out in the evening and grabbed McDonald’s for dinner because that’s all we had time for. That night, we went to the Star Trek Rat Pack show – Max Grodenchik (Rom DS9) and all the other guys we met today (Ethan, Casey, Jeffrey & Vaughn), dress up in tuxes and then perform rat pack style. It was pretty cheesy, but really fun. We enjoyed it.

Day 2 – Saturday. THE BIG DAY. I was so nervous when I woke up that I hit the gym to work off some stress. I was only on the elliptical for 12 minutes because I was short on time, but I think I burned 600 calories. Today was a blur. We got our picture taken with Sir Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard TNG). This was in the morning, and when we walked into the room and he was there, I thought I would faint! Very exciting. HE TOUCHED ME, and he was so nice. And damn, he’s still a fox. Oh yeah, Mike was also there, I think. 🙂 In the afternoon, I bought a print of my favorite photo of the TNG cast – it’s black & white, and they all look beautiful. I was able to get it signed by every single member of the main cast, and Jonathan Frakes (Riker TNG) even wrote “To Trish” on it. It’s amazing, definitely getting framed and going on my wall. We also had our picture taken with the entire cast!! Check all of that off the bucket list, folks. That night was the TNG cast reunion show, and it was great. All 7 of them on stage together! Really fun. Mike was even able to ask them all a question, so he asked them about their nicknames for each other.  After that, we attended the Star Trek Karaoke Party, which was hosted by Nana Visitor (Major Kira DS9) and Rene Auberjonois (Odo DS9 and a million other things). It was the most fun we had at the convention. It was a great chance to mingle and chat with other fans. The rest of the convention is very structured and you are moving from event to event and there isn’t much time to just be social, so this was great. Here are some pictures, drawings, and even a video of the karaoke party! And yes, that’s Mike, my karaoke superstar singing 2 songs. 🙂

Done And Done

Mike, Sir Patrick Stewart, & me!

Day 3 – Sunday. Not going to lie, we were beat. The main things today were getting autographs from Rene Auberjonois (Odo DS9) and Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko DS9). There were lots of other events going on, but nothing huge. Avery Brooks is crazy, that’s the main takeaway from Sunday. We left around 5:30 or so local time, and I was spent.

SO MUCH FUN. Would I do it again? I don’t know. I feel like I accomplished what I wanted out of it, so I don’t know. It would depend on who was going to be there and what the events were I suppose. I’m not opposed to it, that’s for sure. 🙂

If you want to see all of the pics on Flickr, here’s the link so you can look at your leisure. 🙂

Pinball Wizard

When I was in 5th grade, I lived with my grandparents. My grandmother worked part time at a local Laundromat, and every day after school I’d go over there and hang out until she finished work. There was a Ms. Pac Man pinball machine, and my grandma would give me a roll of quarters every day, and I played that thing for what seemed like hours. I loved it! I’ve loved pinball ever since.

Me & the Pinball GorillaThis past Friday night, Mike & I went to the Pinball at the Zoo Expo at the fairgrounds. I was pretty excited, as you can imagine. All the machines were set to free play, so I wandered around and played a bunch of different games. My favorites (Shocker!) were the Star Trek machines. There were 2 TOS machines, and a TNG machine. I got to try them all and they were SO COOL. One of them was for sale and oh, how I would love to have a Star Trek (or any!) pinball machine in my basement!! But alas, 2600 bones is a little more than I am willing to part with. 🙁

I also enjoyed looking at all the pieces and parts – there were lots of vendors there selling balls, flippers, playfields, and tons of little bits and pieces that can be used to repair, build, and/or modify pinball machines. It was cool! Here’s some more pics – mostly of the Star Trek machines, natch.

Warp Speed Ahead

Foreshadowing!!

I don’t know if you remember the last time I foreshadowed a major life event, and how that turned out, but I’m fairly confident that the above pic will soon be a reality as well. 🙂

So, yeah. I’m pretty freaking excited about the Star Trek Convention next month! I’m literally counting the days! We got tickets to the TNG Reunion Event as well, and I’m so excited I can’t even talk about it.  I’M GOING TO MEET JEAN LUC, YOU GUYS. I hope he’s ready for this jelly.

I am a TNG super fan, and that is my favorite Star Trek show without question. However, I’m a little ashamed to admit that I have never watched Voyager or Enterprise. I’m working very diligently to rectify that situation before we leave for the convention. I did the math and I need to watch 5 episodes a day every day until we leave, and so far I’m way ahead of schedule, so I think I should be able to do it. I’m into the 4th season of Voyager right now, and it’s definitely got it’s moments. There have been some really lame throw away episodes (see Amelia Earhart), but also some really really good ones. I’m DYING to find out if Janeway & Chokotay are ever going to get it together and just make out already.

Anyway, I hope you’re having a great day! XOXO

Oy With the Poodles Already!

The last couple of weeks have been sort of eventful, so here’s a catch up of the haps. After Friday 12/21, I was off work until after the first of the year, as was Mike. We started our vacation off with a bang – The Peaches were in town, so we got to spend some time with them, which is always a pleasure. Peach Pit is still a complete jerk (yet somehow lovable) and Peach Fuzz is still adorable & sweet. I sure wish those kids still lived around here so I could see them more often. Anyway, the old gang hit the town and we had a ball. Also, I wore a dress! That’s pretty big news! I only took one picture the entire night, but it’s a DOOZY. Peach Pit is so pasty white that I think the flash scared him.

 Peach Pit

We spent Christmas Eve at our house with my family, and it was nice. We ate, opened presents, ate dessert, and then chit chatted for quite a while. It was a very nice afternoon. Christmas Day was spent in Grand Rapids with Mike’s family, and that was really nice, too. It was a madhouse with a zillion people, but a really great madhouse. The kids got walkie talkies so that was fun!

The day after Christmas I woke up and my throat was sore – I felt like I swallowed broken glass. I shook it off fairly quickly though, and Mike & I ran a few errands. My throat never felt great, but I managed. Well, things went rapidly downhill from there! I got worse and worse and ended up spending the rest of the week and the weekend either in bed or on the couch. I was MISERABLE! It was completely horrible to spend my vacation sick. I was able to catch up on all my DVR’d shows, though, which is the only plus. I am still a couple of Vampire Diaries behind, and I haven’t watched any of this season’s Gossip Girl yet, but what the hay, it was cancelled anyway so I’ve got all the time in the world now, right? I also got sucked into a Gilmore Girls re-watch, and man oh man, do I love the hell out of that show. I think the entire series is up there with Veronica Mars season 1 for best show ever ever ever of all time. I managed to get some work done on my sock yarn binky as well. It’s coming along nicely.

So, I rang in the new year with Mike at home – we watched the ball drop, and I drank about 3 sips of a beer before deciding I couldn’t finish it and dumping it. So yeah, I was THAT SICK. Mike did drag me out of the house on New Year’s Day – it was our last vacation day so we went out for lunch and made a quick trip to Target for some supplies, but we headed home right afterward because I was still feeling pretty pooptastic. I DID score this amazing furry hat/scarf combo that has ears AND a hot pink lining. I am definitely wearing it to the Winter Beer Festival next month. I know this is an awful pic, but I was wicked sick and the lighting was bad, and you will just have to deal:

 new hat

I am not even 2 months past my foot surgery to correct the bunion, but Mike & I have decided we want to be runners, so we are going to start the Couch to 5K program next week. I am not 100% sold on the idea that I will ever be a “runner” but I think it’ll be fun to try. I honestly have no idea how my foot will do, but hey, I’m going to give this a whirl and see where it takes me. Everone I know who runs has said that they never thought they would be a runner or enjoy running and then they ended up being in love with it. Maybe that’s me! I have a sneaking suspicion that it IS NOT, but we shall see. And again, there is the whole question of my foot – I am not sure that it’s even up for it. I’ll know more next week when I try the program for the first time. I’ll give you a full report.

I think that’s it for now. I hope your 2013 is freaking epic.

Tricks or Treats

A couple of drawings from my journal this week.

 Trick or Treat!

Mike hands out candy. I even got him to wear the Shrek ears! This is ink & watercolor.

 Sick Day

I was sick this week, so I made a fire and had a Star Trek movie marathon. I made it through Star Trek IV. Anyway, this is what me being sick looks like. 🙂 Ink & colored pencil.
